Definition and Purpose of ISO 42001

Annex A: AI Controls

The AI risk assessment process requires organisations to identify risks specific to AI systems — including bias and discrimination, privacy violations, safety hazards, lack of transparency, over-reliance on automated decisions, and security vulnerabilities. These risks must be assessed in terms of likelihood and impact, and appropriate controls must be selected from Annex A to treat them.
The AI impact assessment is a distinctive feature of ISO 42001 that has no direct equivalent in other management system standards. It requires organisations to evaluate the broader impact of their AI systems on individuals, groups, communities, and society as a whole — before deployment and on an ongoing basis. This includes assessing potential impacts on human rights, environmental sustainability, and social equity.
The AIMS itself — the System Zarządzania AI — is the overarching framework that brings together policies, processes, procedures, resources, and controls needed to manage AI responsibly. It operates on the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle, ensuring continual improvement of AI governance practices.
Difference from Other AI Frameworks
